Saturday night, HH had plans to see one of our favorite bands with some of his dudes. Grandma wanted to take the boys to a birthday party and then keep them overnight, so I found myself alone with the baby.
I could have stayed home and slept, but I’ve been dying to see the movie Bridesmaids. After putting out the feelers to see if anyone could go with me, and not getting any takers, I decided that I’d just go alone and enjoy myself.
Jolene has been much happier lately, but also she’s having many more alert periods, especially at night. I knew that if I went, I’d have to wear and nurse her on/off the whole time to keep the peace. I got there super early and settled in, hoping I could nurse her to sleep. She got cozy on my chest, but then began to stir. She makes lots of funny little squeaky, chirpy noises all the time, no matter if she’s asleep or eating. She sounds like a cross between a Mogwai, an Ewok, and a hungry kitten.
A woman sat down near me, and when Jolene started her squeaking, the woman next me start giggling and said, “Oh my god, there’s a baby! HA! I thought that sounded like a baby.” We got to talking about her daughter, and she asked me a dozen questions about my Ergo and how the baby liked it in there. I told her we could go pretty much anywhere and do anything, so long as I was wearing her. Then she said “Awe! Isn’t this cute? Mom and babies first Girls’ Night Out!” And that’s when I thought to myself, Yeah, this IS special! Just me and my daughter seeing a “chick flick.” I bet this is the first in a very long line of mommy/daughter activities.
Once Jolene was awake, she really never went back to sleep. The theater was completely packed full, so I had people sitting right next to me on both sides. I was hyper aware of all of the baby’s little noises, and how distracting they could be to the people around me who paid half a week’s salary to see a movie, so I removed myself from the main part of the theater, and stood off to the side where I could still see the movie. Jolene was perfectly happy and content as long as I was standing up wearing her. I swear, at times I thought she was actually watching the movie.
I sat down to nurse her a couple of times, but once she was done, she was restless again, so I was back up standing off to the side of the theater. I really didn’t mind standing at all. This is the life I live now. I paid $10 to stand for two hours, but at least I got to see a movie I’ve wanted to see, and I didn’t have to leave my new baby to do so! I’d also like to thank AMC Theaters for the nice padding under the carpet, so my legs never hurt, and my back never ached.
The movie was hilarious, and Jolene made it all the way through without ever crying or disturbing anybody else. It was a win/win all around.

Babywearing is really saving my sanity this time around, and I’m becoming somewhat obsessed with all my different carriers. If you’re new to this, look for my post in a few weeks which will have pictures of all my carriers along with my personal list of the pros/cons of each.

I am glad you got out. I used to take my eldest to the movies with me in a sling and it worked well until he hit about 9 months and started trying to talk to the screen. :) He even went to a movie premiere at Sundance with us.
