Mom & Daughter’s First Girls’ Night Out

Jun 12th 2011

Saturday night, HH had plans to see one of our favorite bands with some of his dudes. Grandma wanted to take the boys to a birthday party and then keep them overnight, so I found myself alone with the baby.

I could have stayed home and slept, but I’ve been dying to see the movie Bridesmaids. After putting out the feelers to see if anyone could go with me, and not getting any takers, I decided that I’d just go alone and enjoy myself.

Jolene has been much happier lately, but also she’s having many more alert periods, especially at night. I knew that if I went, I’d have to wear and nurse her on/off the whole time to keep the peace. I got there super early and settled in, hoping I could nurse her to sleep. She got cozy on my chest, but then began to stir. She makes lots of funny little squeaky, chirpy noises all the time, no matter if she’s asleep or eating. She sounds like a cross between a Mogwai, an Ewok, and a hungry kitten.

A woman sat down near me, and when Jolene started her squeaking, the woman next me start giggling and said, “Oh my god, there’s a baby!  HA! I thought that sounded like a baby.” We got to talking about her daughter, and she asked me a dozen questions about my Ergo and how the baby liked it in there. I told her we could go pretty much anywhere and do anything, so long as I was wearing her. Then she said “Awe! Isn’t this cute? Mom and babies first Girls’ Night Out!” And that’s when I thought to myself, Yeah, this IS special! Just me and my daughter seeing a “chick flick.” I bet this is the first in a very long line of mommy/daughter activities.

Once Jolene was awake, she really never went back to sleep. The theater was completely packed full, so I had people sitting right next to me on both sides. I was hyper aware of all of the baby’s little noises, and how distracting they could be to the people around me who paid half a week’s salary to see a movie, so I removed myself from the main part of the theater, and stood off to the side where I could still see the movie.  Jolene was perfectly happy and content as long as I was standing up wearing her.  I swear, at times I thought she was actually watching the movie.

I sat down to nurse her a couple of times, but once she was done, she was restless again, so I was back up standing off to the side of the theater. I really didn’t mind standing at all. This is the life I live now. I paid $10 to stand for two hours, but at least I got to see a movie I’ve wanted to see, and I didn’t have to leave my new baby to do so! I’d also like to thank AMC Theaters for the nice padding under the carpet, so my legs never hurt, and my back never ached.

The movie was hilarious, and Jolene made it all the way through without ever crying or disturbing anybody else. It was a win/win all around.

Babywearing is really saving my sanity this time around, and I’m becoming somewhat obsessed with all my different carriers. If you’re new to this, look for my post in a few weeks which will have pictures of all my carriers along with my personal list of the pros/cons of each.

I am glad you got out. I used to take my eldest to the movies with me in a sling and it worked well until he hit about 9 months and started trying to talk to the screen. :) He even went to a movie premiere at Sundance with us.

I truly enjoyed this post, since I will be having my 2nd baby in the next few weeks. I am looking forward to your post regarding baby carriers, since I have two of them and I don't find them to meet my needs. My DH likes the babybjorn but I find it easier ones the baby is older but I want one for the 1st few months. Looking forward to good reading.

This reminds me so much of my son, when he was an infant. He was later diagnosed with SPD...but some babies just like motion so don't get worried, LOL.

that's awesome! I love taking my babies to watch the movies and I am like you, super aware of all the noises they make to not distract anyone else...sometimes it's a win for us, sometimes it's like, BIG mistake. Nothing beats taking the kids with us instead of paying for a babysitter...cause that WOULD be half my salary! lol

That is fantastic!! I'm sure you're used to walking around with her at home anyhow... at least you had something new & fun (other than your baby) to entertain you while you did! When my babies were actually babies, we had a Mondays Movies for Moms deal at our local theater. Every Monday, they would offer up whatever the latest movie was (that would appeal to Moms) in a theater with the lights not quite dimmed all the way and the sound turned down just a little to protect sensitive ears, they even offered stroller-parking. Met some cool Moms this way, and saw more movies than I would've seen in the theater otherwise!

Standing only helped you burn even more calories! Kudos to you for not being intimidated by this whole process.

That's true! I hadn't even thought of the calorie burn!

Good for you - how fun! I'm sure Jolene loved it. The first of many fun nights out for the girls, I'm sure :) And babywearing is the best! I still prefer our carrier to the stroller any day, and my baby is 2! We graduated from the Bjorn to the Babyhawk, and it's fantastic.

Love this! My daughter is now ten months old and little Miss Activity. I so miss the days when I could pop her in the bjorn and go anywhere, anytime - movies, parties, the ballet - with her happy as a bug in a rug!

I LOVE that you did this! So fun...

Well done you! That's brilliant!

My Ergo has saved my life many times - babywearing rocks! I'll be keen to hear your reviews, although I'm glad I bought an ergo as my first carrier - I reckon I would have bought many different carriers in the search to find the perfect one if I hadn't!

that is awesome. so cool of you to be aware and considerate of the other movie goers- you are setting a great example and showing people that babies can go to the movies! I just saw bridesmaids too and it was hilarious. so glad you got a great night out just the girls!

I have a baby carrier fetish, so yes, please do post! My friend has my fave carrier (Baby K'tan) and won't give it back. Wish I had an Ergo but they're too spendy. Making due right now with my ring sling. Sold my Maya Wrap. I've tried SO MANY different carriers over the years. :D

If we were closer, I would've totally gone with you!
We could've taken shifts with the babe :)

I can't wait for your post on the carriers! I am pregnant with my second right now, and didn't like the carrier I had last time! It is so overwhelming with all the different types and styles!

I will look forward to that entry! We have a cheap one that we use all the time, but it definitely isn't comfy, so I'm on the hunt for better and comfier ones.

Husband and I took Miss 3yrs to see Hop, her brother was 2 weeks old...I too spent most of the movie to the side...at least it had awesome music to jig baby to :) think Hole, yay!

With #2 baby wearing was tremendously heplful, I imagine with #3 it's a matter of survival. One hand for each kiddo and the baby strapped to you :-)

This is great! Yay for getting out! Bridesmaids was a fun movie--I hope you enjoyed it and Jolene paid no attention! ;-)

I took my first out to see Knocked Up (I KNOW) back in '07. He was two months old at the time and he latched onto a boob and nursed on one side (I was too afraid to pull him off and make him mad and noisy) for the ENTIRE MOVIE! The entire TWO HOUR and NINE MINUTE movie!

Hope you get more fun nights out!

What a lovely thought...the first of many girls' nights with your little one. I'm glad that she was happy and calm and let mommy enjoy the movie! There are some theatres here that do special showings for parents with babies. They turn the sound down in action movies so that the sudden loud noises don't upset the little ones.
