Official “Crunchy” Mama

Feb 06th 2009

Cloth_diapers My transition to crunchy mom is complete.  Never thought it would happen to me, but here I am a hardcore-breastfeeding, natural-birth-advocating, baby-food-making, sometimes-cosleeping, and baby-wearing mom.  And now, we are now officially cloth diapering our kiddos.

Remember that "button" I said I needed to find that would say "Click here to buy the perfect cloth diaper that will work for your family and fit your baby all for a price your husband can swallow without losing his damn mind."  Welp… I found it

I bought two of those packs, which will allow us to go at least 2 days between washings if we want.  Each pack was only $42.  Excellent.

I had planned on spending a little more than that, and since there was free shipping I threw some extras on to my order.  I was having fun.

Here's what I got

  • Two 12-diaper Starter Packs (24 Chinese Prefolds, 4 Thirsties Covers, 2 Snappis)
  • 1 extra Thirsties Cover (for good measure)
  • 3-pack of BumGenius doublers for overnight
  • 1 BumGenius Wetbag
  • 1 set of Organic BabyLegs
  • 2 Sets of regular BabyLegs

Total cost: $161 — and it arrived at my house less than 48 hours after I placed the order.

We also bought a couple of packs of cloth training pants for Jonas.  He'll start on those tomorrow.

I'm so friggity friggin excited I can hardly contain myself.  Who knew cloth diapering could be so much fun!

Never thought I'd CD either but here I am, doing it the old-fashioned way with prefolds and pins and no clothes dryer. It's really not been a hardship at all! Though I do put him in disposables at nighttime because he's a very heavy wetter.

I wasn't a hippie until I had kids. We started using cloth when my oldest was 21 months old and I was pregnant with #2. Aside from a package of gDiaper refills for long weekends when we won't have access to laundry, I haven't had to buy a single diaper since March 2008 (though I did buy a few new ones when I sold off some that were too small).
We use Purex Free and clear too. It's fine.

Isn't it funny who you turn into when you become a mom? I never thought in a million years I would have nursed a toddler, had a homebirth VBAC, cloth diapered, homeschooled, co-sleep... In my world, only complete nut jobs did any one of those things let along all of them. Yet, here I am. Amazing how motherhood, and really thinking deeply about these issues, can change a person.

Aw, I love Mom's Milk Boutique! I'm on their mailing list and they always have great weekly specials and such. When we got our cloth diapers, I spent close to 5 hours picking out everything I wanted. It was the most fun I've had online shopping!

We're using Purex Free & Clear.... My mommy friends recommended that one over Charlie's or the others because it doesn't leave a buildup like the natural detergents, and it doesn't have a lot of irritants.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Let us know what detergent you end up with? I was using some natural stuff in the beginning which made my BG leaky so I gave up. I have the bigger size and am trying to motivate to use them.

In all fairness, I haven't had to wash them yet (John's the laundry mistress in our house) so we'll see how "fun" I think they are when I'm the one that has to wash them! Haa ha.

Wow--you are making CDing sound actually not that expensive. I am constantly lured towards the oh so cute cloth diapers, but there is always something that stops me. They sounds like lots of work, and I'm just...lazy I guess.
