One Giant Step BACK for Feminism…

Aug 30th 2008

By now, we've all heard.  Palin is McCain's pick for VP.

Duh, of course he picked a woman.  That's how stupid he thinks we all are.  As though we didn't care what kind of woman we put in office, as long as there was a vagina involved.

Well, she freaks me out.  Actually, she also grosses me out.  Here she bragged about going back to work just 3 days after giving birth:

"This was not a mother's typical visit to the office to show off the new baby; instead, she was serving notice that a child of special needs will not hinder her professional commitments."

"I will not shirk my duties," she said.

WOW.  So taking more than 72 hours to be with your brand new baby is now considered "shirking" your responsibilities?  Her baby cannot be a "hinderance?"  What kind of a monster is she?

I thought the Republicans were supposed to be all about family values.  I guess if she gets into office then it's only a matter of time before we kiss our (already measly) maternity leave goodbye.

It's digusting the number of people all over the interweb touting her 3 day maternity leave as some sort of "standard" we should all live up to.

God, as if we didn't already have to work hard enough to get some time with our children before having to go back to work.

I wonder if the Canadians, with their YEAR of PAID maternity leave are "impressed" with Palin's actions?  They probably think it's an inhuman standard, and so do I.

Well, great.  I was already worried enough about the election – and now some gun-toting, anti-choice, anti-maternity leave wacko is possibly a heartbeat away from running the show.  Boy will we be in some hot water.

I know Reiza,
And I have this terrible feeling that if she actually was only 3 months, they'd do something sick like induce her a month early to make sure she gives birth in December. That might sound like a National Inquirer story, but I've seen crazy people do much worse, and if they're hiding all this, then they qualify as crazy.

There are some conflicting reports about how far along she is. Some say 3 months. Most say 5 months. My sister wonders if they haven't purposely altered it specifically to combat those rumors. I've read articles where they do specifically say they came forward now because of the rumors about the baby.
I want to say that I agree with what you wrote about making this the standard. On an online discussion, some friends say they're excited about Palin because they feel she will bring a lot of attention to motherhood. My fear is that it will be the wrong kind of attention. She went back to work after 3 days and she had a premature child with a disability, so certainly we can all do that. I already hear enough crap about being a SAHM. Now am I going to hear even more people bitching about how I shouldn't be home because Sarah Palin went back to work and she has 5?
I absolutely agree we should be focusing on motherhood, but this is the WRONG focus.

But Bristol just announced she's pregnant (again?!)

OMG, OMG, OMG! That link about the baby is amazing. I hadn't heard that and OMG, that's quite a bit of info on there. Wow. Just wow!
Did you see the link I posted about her? I couldn't put my thoughts into words, but Smiley's article did.

Yes, I knew about that already, I've just been biding my time until "official" news sources report on it before I do a victory dance here.
I've been googling "bristol Palin baby" since 9 pm last night. This is going to come out, one way or the other. Either way, she's a nut job.
Oh, and Welcome Carly!

HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! You MUST go to the website below. You'll thank me later, I'm sure:

What gets me is that the McCain campaign actually thinks that those disillusioned Hillary supporters will see a set of boobs and vote, regardless on her (in)experience.
She was a beauty queen and a fisher before she became the mayor of a tiny town and hasn't even been governor (of Alaska, no less) for two years. If she had been a man with the set of credentials she has, she wouldn't have gotten the gig (i.e. Gov. Kain of VA).
McCain is simply lower the bar simply to have the token woman on the ballot. Not to mention she's a CRAZY social conservative.
(I've been lurking your blog for some time now, so I hope you don't think I'm a creeper!)

1. It also says above that her child has "special needs" which, of course, makes it all the more depressing.
2. Women in the US of A should get a minimum of 6 months fully paid maternity leave. Hell, if WIC wants all moms to exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first 6 months of their lives, doesn't this just make sense?
3. In France, women get TONS of help after the birth of the child. This includes house cleaning AND wet nurses (if desired), all provided by the French government. WTF is wrong with Americans these days?
