Should Wii Buy One?

Nov 05th 2009

Wiifit The husband and I are pretty anti-video game.  We never enjoyed them growing up, and now that we see grown men sitting around playing World of Warcraft while their wives do everything around the house, the whole concept seems to be Loserville with a Capital L.  I would so much rather be reading a book.  We have always said that we didn’t want our kids to get into video games either because there are so many other activities they could be doing instead.  They could play sports, or play an instrument, or play a board game.  You know… all the other things in the world that can stimulate a mind other than staring at another screen.

And don’t get us started on “Rock Band.”  Ohmyfuckinggod.  If you want to play music and pretend to be a rock star, what the hell is wrong with picking up an actual guitar that makes music?  That’s what the husband and I did when we were kids, and that’s why we got to spend our 20’s living the rock life.  What would have happened if (insert your favorite recording artist here) had not picked up an instrument when they were a kid, and instead decided to play freaking “Rock Band”?

So here in this house we have always written video games off as “not our thing.”  Meh.

Then along came the Wii Fit.  Neither one of us has ever used the Wii Fit, but we have played a few games of Wii bowling at our friends’ house and a fair amount of fun.  But the Wii Fit actually sounds really useful to us.  Perhaps it’s just the thing that may motivate me to get off my ass and do some Yoga.  I can’t afford to take any Yoga (or other fitness) classes, and maybe this is a cheaper alternative.

So now we’re contemplating buying a Wii as our family Christmas present to ourselves.  The system would cost us about $300, and that’s a huge chunk of change to us.  So I ask you, loyal blog readers, is this a good purchase?  The idea of buying a video game system is so intensely unappealing to me, but I sure do like the sound of having an interactive fitness system in the house.

Thoughts?

I have to agree with Lindsay. The Wii Fit gets old after a while. If you are looking for a workout, go with EA Sports Active. It seriously kicks my butt EVERY time I use it, and there are 3 different levels of difficulty. I never really broke a sweat with the Wii Fit games and it can be slow with all of the talking the "trainers" do. I want to get the new Biggest Loser interactive game, too. Not to mention the regular Wii games (bowling, tennis, etc.) are lots of fun as well because they get you off the couch unlike "regular" video games.

I just wanted to tell you that I have a wii fit I got last christmas and used twice. It's perfectly fun and serviceable but I just found out I like to take classes to do exercise because I am social like that. My husband and I are moving to England in January and looking to sell our barely used Wii and Wii Fit so if you DO decide to go for it, email me and I will give you a good deal.

I own both the wii fit and wii active. I would go for the Wii Active over the fit. Yes I like the fit and I hate that active doesn't have yoga but if it's a true workout you are looking for the Wii Active is much more challenging, better paced and set up, and score cheaper. Additionally if you buy an extra nunchuck, pilates band, and nunchuck holder you can do the exercises with a partner and challenge each other. Great if you are competitive. The only things I don't like about Wii Active - no yoga, no ability to track your weight, I hate the pilates bands that come with it but have yet to find a suitable alternative.
The weight tracker is probably not a huge deal. That being said I do not have the newest edition of wii fit (I think they came out with a new game or something to go with it) so I don't know what changes have been made.
One other comment (sorry so lengthy) my mom has had a personal trainer fro over 2 years now - she has the wii fit and wii active as well. She said that the wii active worked her even better than her personal trainer. I thought that was quite a review in itself. Good luck!

I wouldn't bother with the Wii Fit. It's tediously slow paced and not a very good workout. And as far as the yoga goes, if you like waiting a minute in between each pose while the game loads and talks to you, then it's great. And you don't need to stand on a balance board to do yoga. It's a gimmick. I like EA Sports Active for the Wii instead. It's a better workout. Or get a yoga dvd if you want to do yoga. It's a LOT less expensive and will be a better experience!

I am with the majority opinion here that Wii fit is awesome! Now, I am not going to claim to be a video game hater. I loved video games growing up and spent hours and hours glued to my television during middle school. And then one day, I realized that it was a lot more fun to actually be out doing something than pretending to do something. Wii fit is different than those video games. While I have spent as much as one hour on the Wii fit, it was a sweaty, make your muscles ache hour. I was fit when I purchased it and I am no more or less fit now. I didn't replace any routine exercises like stroller walks and bike rides with the Wii, but I did add yoga, push-ups, and aerobic hula hooping to my daily routine. What is cool is my 15 old daughter plays with me trying to keep up with the same motions I am. I couldn't vote for this system more.

I hate most video games, but Wii is a blast. We went away with friends for a long weekend and I got completely addicted to Wii fit. I would love one.

I totally HATE most video games with a passion. However, my husband talked me into the Wii a couple of years ago, and honestly, it's awesome. We have Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, and we're planning to get Wii Fit 2. They are easy enough for young kids to get the hang of playing, and we never let them play by themselves so it is a family activity for us. The Wii Fit probably isn't much of a workout for someone who already does a pretty good workout routine, but for someone who's out of shape (read: ME!) it's an awesome intro. I wouldn't suggest buying the more solo oriented games. It doesn't sound like they'd be a good fit for your family values, but the sports oriented ones that are geared toward multi player play are really nice.

I LOVE OUR WII! Ok, just to begin with, I'm a huge nintendo fangirl, and love everything they have ever done.
Wii fit is really incredible. The balance games are a lot of fun, as are the yoga poses and the strength training. The aerobics is my favorite though. It doesn't feel like a workout since you are still in your home, and you can do it for as short or as long as you want.
Now, I'm a video game head, so my view my definitely not be one people listen to lol. I play two instruments, and I absolutely love rock band and guitar hero. I definitely understand telling kids to learn how to play an instrument and don't rely on video games, but I think the games they have are a lot of fun. It's just something silly you can do with your friends when you're too bored to go out.
Oh, and I would recommend getting a Wii (they're only $200 apiece), Wii Fit, and Wii Fit Plus. Wii Fit Plus just came out, and it is as fun as the other one, if not better.
Hope you enjoy it if you get it!!

Kids like it but I can't help but notice the people I know who own one aren't exactly "fit". The great thing about fitness is that it can be as cheap as a walk or a yoga video from the library.

We have a Wii Fit, and I think it is very useful. I'm not a huge fan of video games, either, and I certainly don't think my 2 year needs to play them. My husband loves them, though, and that's his thing, so I don't let it bother me. As for Rock Band, I'm against it for kids, too, because they can learn a real instrument for crying out loud! But I have friends who are adults and they are never going to play a real guitar and they're really too old for being in a real band (especially since they don't know how to play already) and they're not married. It's an amusing past-time. For me, I just wish I'd had the gall to actually try out for any kind of singing thing every time I pick up a RB microphone.

Fairly new reader and first-time commenter, but I do have an opinion on this - and it's yes, the Wii Fit is worth getting.
I've avoided video games like the plague for years, but this is something else. My stepkids have had a Wii for a couple of years, but we just got the Fit this past summer. I started using it almost two months ago, several times a week, and I'm loving it. I like the Yoga on it, but it offers plenty of other workout options to keep you from getting in a rut.

Will you really use it? It is fun, for both kids and grownups, but if it's going to be like the stationary bicycle in every other cellar, you might save your money, or buy sneakers and go for a walk. On the other hand, if you already like yoga and have trouble with the money and/or the time, then, maybe you should. The yoga is great (for me, anyway, I'm not really a yoga person), the balance games are curiously addicting, and I even kind of like some of the aerobic stuff. And it nags you gently - "you haven't been here in X days" and things like that.

We are not big video gamers at our house either, but I really wanted the Wii fit too. And the kids had played a few games at friends houses so they wanted it as well. We ended up doing the same thing last year - made it our family Christmas gift. We spend New Year's at home with the kids - I think we played it all evening. Time spent on it really hasn't been an issue because the kids have to ask if they can play it and I don't always say yes. Husband and I usually only play games when we play as a family unless it's using the Wii Fit.
