The Birth of Two Babes, 4 Years Apart

Aug 01st 2010

Today was my first born son’s 4th Birthday. He’s currently obsessed with All Things Toy Story, so his aunt bought him the Buzz Lightyear costume that he had been begging for.  There’s nothing that compares to seeing sheer joy on a child’s face when they are given exactly what their little heart desires.  It melts me every time.  I think Hyphenated Husband actually got high of watching his son’s smile grow wider as he enjoyed his 4th birthday party festivities.  I cannot believe my baby is four.  I grew that person in my body, and now look at him.  What an amazing miracle.

Four years ago today I became a mother, and that experience changed everything about the way I see the world.  Meeting my son was one of the two best things that has ever happened to me, but his birth left a scar on my womb and an ache in my heart that sent shock waves through every aspect of my life.  It’s been a difficult journey, one that may never be complete, but I have come to accept that what happened to me made me the person I am today — an outspoken advocate for mothers and babies.

Today, exactly four years to the day after my cesarean surgery, I opened Birthing Babes Childbirth Education Studio to help women in my area avoid what happened to me on that day.  We have full childbirth preparation courses, prenatal fitness, HypnoBirthing, breastfeeding classes, a walk-in breastfeeding clinic, plus babywearing, cloth diapering, and infant care classes too.  We’re even hosting workshops for local doulas and educators to network and continue their learning.

Trust me when I say that opening the studio today most definitively felt like giving birth again.  My husband and I spent 18 hours preparing the space yesterday, snuck in about 30 seconds of sleep, and went straight back at it this morning to host our grand opening.  I am just as exhausted now as I was after my long labors, but it was all worth it.  It was a huge success, I’d say.  We had about 40-50 attendees with a great mix of expecting moms, seasoned parents, and birth professionals all engaged in wonderful conversations while birth videos played on a 6-foot screen.  In a word — it was awesome.

Happy Birthday to my baby and my business.

I know this is an old post, but thank you so much for opening your studio! My husband and I took a hypnobirthing class here (we live like 30-40 mins away from lombard) and we had a wonderful experience. We are due in 4 weeks and I feel a lot more comfortable and confident about the birth than I would have without your studio. Thanks again so much for this.

I met u at BlogHer via Calley & was reading back on your posts-congratulations!!! I am so excited for you & your new venture! We need more & more of these businesses. Wish I was in your area! Best wishes to you!!

Awesome! Congratulations! Though trust me, next time you're in labour, you'll be all like, "I'd rather be opening a childbirth education studio!"

The storefront looks fantastic! I just wanted to let you know that I'm expecting my first baby in January and after doing lots of googling and blog-reading, your blog strongly influenced me to make every effort to have a birth with as few medical interventions as possible. It wasn't long ago that I'd never even heard of a doula and now I'm going to have one present for my baby's birth! Thank you for spreading the word and helping women realize that the most common medical practices are not necessarily the best practices for everyone. The more informed I become, the more I feel capable of being an advocate for myself and my baby.

SO AWESOME! Congrats! =)

Your son looks so happy! Congratulations on your business! I hope to meet you at BlogHer. :)

This looks awesome!!! Where exactly is it? Like what state? Cuz if I'm close enough, I would love to come help and support you.

I'm so glad to see a natural parenting ANYTHING come to the Chicagoland area! Sometimes I feel like I'm an endangered species, or perhaps a stranger in a strange land because I don't know any other mothers IRL who cloth diaper, have natural birthings, hand knit their own wool soakers, nurse their babies until a year, babywear... the list goes on and on! It is so very nice to know that there really ARE others like me out there.

Happy Birthday to your boy, and happy birthing day to you for both the boy and the studio! I just love that you have opened that place! I hope it helps more women and men and children than you can count!

Congrats on the whole thing Gina. It looks and sounds like it will be awesome.

Stumbled upon your blog through the blogluxe awards site. Dude, your building is in Lombard. When I saw the 630 area code I looked up the site. I grew up in Hillside, lived in Villa Park during my late teens years, and now am in the NW burbs. I have to acquaint myself with your blog but I can tell me likey. :)

Congrats on both! Especially Birthing Babes!

You have been nominated for a blog award! :D Go here to see:

Happy Birthday to your big boy! Love the color of your building. Awesome! So happy for you :)

If I lived closer, I'd be there to support your business in a hot second! Happy Birthday to your boy baby and your business baby!

You make me want to move back to Chicago!!! Congratulations.

Isn't it amazing how drastically your life can change in just a few years?

If you had told me four years ago that I would be where I am now I would have said no way in hell . . .

So glad your opening went well (and being a girlie-girl I love the pink)!!!

Congratulations! I LOVE the pink!

Congratulations on your store and on your adorable son. Many birthday wishes for both :)

Oh Gina, I'm crying tears of joy for you here. YOU DID IT!!! And you're going to do so much for the birthing women of Chicago.

BRAVO!!!

Ok, now this is getting crazy! Apparently you and I have semi parallel lives. My youngest childs bday was on the 1st, and your gorgeous new business is just what I've always dreamed of. I opened my office about 7 years ago (I'm a midwife) but bad luck combined with economic stuff forced closure. Everything changed for a while, but I seem to be healing and heading back into the ring. I always envisioned a space like you have, where so many birth and parenting needs are met in one great place. I admire your work, thanks for putting it out there!

Absolutely LOVE the logo!

Congratulations Gina, I'm so pleased for you! It gives me the warm fuzzies knowing that there is a one-stop empowerment shop for expectant and new parents in the Chicago area.

Congratulations on the grand opening and happy birthday to your son! I really love the double pregnant Bs logo. Wishing you much success!

Yeah! Congratulations! Happy Birthday to your little guy. Love the smile on his face in that picture! :)

Dang! Look at all that wonderful pink. LOVE IT!

And Happy Birthday to the Big Boy, He looks tickled purple in his fabulous Buzz Lightyear suit.

Congratulations!! that is so exciting! I'm sure it will be a success. I wish I could have my baby there -- but I don't think we're in close proximity.

Oh - we're not a birth center. We're a childbirth education study. Classes only - no births :)

Happy birth day to your babies. And happy birth-ing day to you!

I just know that Birthing Babes is going to be awesome. I so wish I could visit myself.

Congratulations!

Congrats on your DS turning 4, I am pretty sure that he makes the cutest Buzz Lightyear I have seen around, and on the opening of Birthing Babes. To celebrate both on the same day, talk about coming full circle.

Your post brought me to tears because not only are you going to help countless women through education and support resources, but you are going to inspire them as a mother who followed her dream, and made her passion a reality - bricks and mortar! Way to go!

I am not a psychic, but I feel pretty confident when I say that your center is going to be a hit, a smashing success, and I would not be surprised if in the future there were "Birthing Babes" studios in various cities across the country. The idea is just to wonderful to be contained.

So congrats, enjoy your journey, and success as you work to empower women in their journey through pregnancy and into motherhood!

Congrats on both the 4th anniversary of becoming a mother and opening your studio! I went through a c/s last year with the daughter that I placed for adoption and I hear you when you say that it is something to recover from. I will be recovering from that for the rest of my life. I'm also a nursing student/doula/future midwife/future LC and your studio sounds amazing. I'd love to see the inside! If you ever want to open another branch in Texas, let me know!

Aw, happy birthday to your baby boy! I was just thinking tonight that the years between age 4 and 8 went by in a BLINK. Seriously. Don't blink!

Congratulations on both of your beautiful endeavors!

I am so, so, so psyched for you that you have made this happen. I *love* the building and the window! =)

Congratulations Gina! So sorry I was unable to attend your grand opening, but I was sending good wishes your way!

How wonderful for you to be able to celebrate your son's birthday and to celebrate all of the things you've learned and can share since the day he was born.

LOVE it! excellent work! wish I lived closer so we could come support your venture.

Big congrats on your babies! :) So exciting. You are literally bringing great things to the world.

Just when I think I can't get any more excited for your venture . . . you go and top yourself. Congratulations! This is the beginning of so much awesome for everyone involved.

Gorgeous storefront!
