The Country’s First Cesarean Art Exhibit – This Weekend Only

Apr 30th 2010

“Cesarean Voices” Art Exhibit
April 30 & May 1st
10 am – 4 pm

Christian Temple Christian Church
5820 Edmonson Ave
Baltimore, MD 21228

Earlier tonight, a first-of-its kind art exhibit showcasing the voices of cesarean survivors opened in Baltimore, Maryland.  Hosted by ICAN of Baltimore, and working on a grant from Lamaze International, the exhibit hopes to highlight the deep emotions that cesarean mothers can feel after a surgical birth.

Not every mother is upset by her cesarean, but many, many are.  These mothers are often marginalized and told to “get over it.” Birth trauma is a real event and deserves to be looked at the same as trauma from any other physically and emotionally disrupting occurrence in a woman’s life – even if she had a “healthy” baby or her cesarean may have been necessary.  A healthy baby is important, but so is a healthy mother, and many women are left with real injuries, both physical and emotional, relating to a surgical delivery.

So far, those who have viewed the exhibit are saying that it is very powerful and moving.  Famous birth advocates, such as Marsden Wagner, have even been spotted taking in the collection.  If you go/went, please leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts.  I’d also love to see any pictures you may have snapped.

Once the exhibit closes, it will be available for travel around the country. Contact Barbara Stratton at icanofbaltimore@comcast.net for more information.

I went, and it was seriously phenomenal. I found myself returning to two things over & over again. One was a solid blue canvas entitled "Are you my mother?" that represented the blue sheet that a cesarean baby sees when searching for its mother. The other was Eugenia Algaze Garcia's works in the empowerment area. You can view many of them at http://www.mindful-art.com/BIRTH%20Series.htm. Her piece entitled VBAC uses trees that resemble humans holding up and supporting a mother in labor. It was divine. Kudos to Barbara, Bobbie, Tiffancy, Ann, Elena, and the rest of the ICAN of Baltimore community for putting on an amazing event.

Thanks, Gina! :) Happy Almost Birthday... I took your survey!
