“Things You Should Read” Thursday

Apr 09th 2009

This will be the first in a series of weekly installments I am dubbing "Things You Should Read Thursday" in which I post the stories and articles of the week that made my heart go pitter-patter.

First Up – A Birth Story:

HBA2C, 45+ Weeks gestation, 11 lb, 12 oz baby
This mother chose an HBA2C after her the local doctors and hospitals refused to let her try a VBAC or a gentler cesarean (not being separated from baby, etc.)  She also had a "T" incision with one of her cesareans.  She went 5 weeks post dates, and delivered a (nearly) 12 lb baby without so much as a single tear. (thank you to Unnecesarean for finding this one.)

Next Up – I know many of you are probably sick of hearing about Hannah Rosin's article, but I personally enjoy every tongue-lashing she receives over it – particularly those from the important or influential.  I admit that I sadistically revel in the beating of a dead horse, until it rolls over and admits that it was wrong. (And for those of you wearing tight panties, no, I am not calling Rosin a horse anymore than Obama was calling Palin a pigUmm.. Err… Ahem.)  Either way, I will continue to denounce this article until The Atlantic, GMA, and Rosin herself come forward issue retractions, and apologize for all they've done to undermine mothers and breastfeeding.

And I get by with a little help from my smart friends…

Peggy O'Mara: Case Closed, Breast is Best
Peggy writes a compelling piece on the facts, and tells Rosin "Slandering breastfeeding because our society makes it inconvenient is like vacillating on equal pay for women because it's difficult to achieve."  Go Peggy.

Kimya Dawson: The Case FOR Breastfeeding
Before several Twitter friends directed me to this article, I had never heard of this singer/songwriter.  I can't keep up with what the kids are listening to these days.  But reading this article actually made my milk let down. This artist's song was used without permission by Rosin in her podcast, and when the artist (who also hated Rosin's article) found out, the gloves came off.  I want to hug her.

Go forth and enjoy these quality pieces of writing.

I am not sure where to post this. I love your blog, it has come to e at a prefect time in my life. I happened across a web site and was wondering your take on it.

You really call her saying “It is a serious time commitment that pretty much guarantees that you will not work in any meaningful way” a "balanced" piece of journalism?
I think it is offensive to every working/pumping mother out there today. There is absolutely nothing "balanced" about her article. She applies her upper-class white anglo attitude, combined with straight out misinformation, to steer overwhelmed women into justifying her own actions. It is completely biased and irresponsible.
If she had titled the article "My own personal feelings about breastfeeding" and kept out the misinformation, that would have been one thing. But it's entirely another to tout yourself as a researcher just to rant on a topic.
By the way, as Peggy O'Mara brought up - Betty Friedan wrote "The Feminine Mystique" when MOST mothers were formula feeding. Clearly it wasn't the breast keeping them down.

I thought the Rosin's article was excellent and very balanced. I'm a feminist and breastfed my two children for over 2 years each and have had many of the same concerns.
As a sociologist by training, I look at the studies and socio-economic realities for children place a much stronger correlative role in IQ, health and future success for children than breastfeeding does (even citing the most generous studies).
I think we should really look at socio-economic support for mothers and children. I am myself, American Indian and see how providing higher paying jobs, education and daycare and healthcare help disadvantaged groups succeed. Look at the role in GI Bill in pulling a huge segment of the American population out of poverty in the mid-20th century.
As a breastfeeding mother I can see how Dr. Sears's Attachment Parenting can lead to what Betty Friedan described in The Feminine Mystique". I've experienced it myself. To viciously silence the women in this country regarding their own bodies and experiences is a mind boggling response, to say the least.

Thank you for posting these articles and the HBAC story! It is really funny to me that Kimya Dawson had a run in with Rosin because when I watched the podcasts myself (as outrageous and nauseating as they were) I honestly was surprised that her song was used and I actually thought to myself "I can't believe she got permission to use that song!" (I am a fan of Kimya Dawson and know a bit about her.) Well anyways apparently Rosin DIDNT get permission! What a sleaze! If she's such an amazing journalist she should probably brush up on her copyright and piracy laws. Hahaha! Anyways, great post!
